Nice work on the post Peter. In your point about not putting keyword pages in the nav, if, for example, you were working on a Phoenix lawyer website would you recommend pages such as “Glendale Lawyer” targeting each of the individual communities around the larger city but don’t put the links to these pages in the nav? Thanks.

To begin with, whilst grey hat techniques can give a site a slight edge over those that utilize white hat only, there’s risk involved. Gray hat SEO breaks the rules and whilst it may not be obvious to Google, there remains a risk that competitor sites may recognize and report the use of it.

Black Hat SEO: Is It Really as Evil as They Say? - Wakefield SEO

A man walks into a bar and notices a glass jar filled to the brim with $20 bills. He asks the bartender what the jar is for and he replies “It’s a challenge – it’s twenty bucks to try, and whoever can complete the challenge gets the money in the jar. No one has successfully completed it yet.” “What is the challenge?” the man asks. “First, you have to drink a bottle of fire vodka, and do so without crying. Then, you have to take an infected tooth from a vicious attack dog, and lastly, you have to give the 95 year old ex-nun who lives upstairs the time of her life in bed.” The man thinks about it. After a few drinks he decides to do it. With tears running down his face, he manages to drink the fire vodka. Next, he goes out into the back where the vicious attack dog lives. Everyone in the bar hears growling, moaning, and the dog yelping and simpering. After half an hour, the man stumbles back in, shirt torn and bloody, and slurs “Whereis the95 year old-nun with the sore toooth?”

SEO is a process of obtaining traffic from “free,” “natural” “organic,” or “editorial” search results on search engines. SEO is often about making small modifications to the different parts of your website. These changes might seem like incremental improvements, but when we combined it with other optimizations, they could have a noticeable impact on your website’s user performance and experience in basic search results. Search engine optimization affects only basic search results, not on sponsored or paid results such as Google, yahoo or AdWords.

SEO Strategies for Ranking Higher - Wakefield SEO

One word of advice: don’t. If you get found out, you will get a penalty, it’s as simple as that and all of the investment you have put into your site will be worth zero. However, you can list your site on relevant industry directories as this is approved of.

Yassin, As I stated in the post, I don’t necessarily recommend doing any of these without some tweaking. My primary reason for interest in these methods is incase a friend or client comes to me that has been using these methods. That way I have an understanding of what did and didn’t work and how to fix any issues. -Peter Reply

As you may guess, black-hat SEO strategies are manipulative and unethical. Black-hat SEO exploits a search engine’s algorithm and abuses the system in order to increase a website’s rankings through duplicate content, keyword stuffing, paid links, and hidden content. While these tactics tend to give a huge boost to rankings, the rank increases tend to be brief due to the advancement in machine learning and algorithm updates. In addition, when discovered, websites that implement such tactics are heavily penalized by search engines. I covered the layers of black-hat tactics and the potential penalties associated on a previous blog post.

Hi Peter, Thanks for the Grey hat techniques. I was specifically looking to put content behind tabs for my website. I basically want to have small content on the top of each page(20 pages) and the bottom pane I want to put content behind in 7 tabs. The 7 tabs content will be almost same for all the 20 pages. Is this a good SEO practice? Regards, Ray Reply

Microsites are no secret. They have been abused in every way imaginable. However, I will say that the most benefit I’ve seen gained from them is splitting them up by niche for local services. For example, a law firm having one site for their divorce services and then another for personal injury. This allows you to focus on specific areas for each site.

Most search engine optimization experts fall somewhere in the category of “gray hat” SEO. They follow the rules search engines provide as to best SEO practices, but they are continually pushing the envelope and exploring the “gray” areas of SEO. They bend the rules for the benefit of their clients without usually breaking them. Gray hat SEO’s are not black hat, nor are they lily white hat either.

Hey Ray, Personally, I think if the content isn’t providing useful information to visitors, then it shouldn’t be there. However, if you’re going to hide content behind tabs, make sure it’s as different as possible. You don’t want to put the same content on two pages let alone 20. -Peter Reply

Google doesn’t like doorway pages because they fail to provide “clear, unique value.” So if your doorway pages do provide some sort of value, you might be able to avoid the penalties.

Endeavoring into black hat SEO is dangerous, and it will most likely end with your website being banned from search engines altogether. White hat SEO tactics have a better impact and tell search engines that you mean business in a professional way. What one should also remember is that paid links are also included into search engine’s no-go SEO tactics. If a search engine finds out you have purchased a link, your site could potentially be banned from indexing as well.

This is pretty straight forward. You can reach out to bloggers and ask them to review your product. They’re usually eager to accept, since everyone likes free stuff. However, since you’re giving an incentive, it’s possible for it to be considered a paid link.

trying to learn everything I can about seo, doing alot of work myself. My question is submission software is it white or black hat seo. Big companies have to use some kind of software for their customers, I know they are not doing it manually?

This goes hand in hand with the method above. You should uniquely write the content for every page even if it’s several thousands of pages. However, well done merge text and spun content do still work. Yes, even after panda. The thing you need to keep in mind is the more pages your using this type of content on, the bigger risk you’re taking. A bot spitting out a few hundred pages of content has a low risk of duplication. However, when you make that several thousand, the chances increase dramatically.
