Glad you enjoyed it, Brian. That’s a great question. I actually use a Chrome extension called Check My Links. It finds all the broken links on a page VERY quickly. To help automate the process of finding pages and checking for broken links, I’ve also used the (paid) tool at BrokenLinkBuilding.com, which I really like.
26. The free (but much less accurate) version of the method above would be to target keywords that have a 90+ AdWords competition score. Some of these keywords may not be very profitable for you because of your website’s particular design, call to action, and so on.
Techopedia explains White Hat Search Engine Optimization (White Hat SEO) White hat SEO aims to provide search engines with relevant information about the content on the site and present it clearly and honestly. Google, the world’s most popular search engine, uses an ever-evolving algorithm that aims to evaluate a Web page much like a human reader would. This means that Google looks for signs of unique (not copied from another site) content that is relevant to the given search term. Google uses several other measures and factors to determine whether a given site is a reputable and trusted source. Although black hat SEO techniques can fool search engines and increase search engine page rank for the sites that use them, search engines frown on the use of these techniques. Sites that are found to be using black hat SEO may have their page ranks downgraded; their sites may even be removed from search results on a given search engine.
thanks jesse — blog commenting can set of an incredible chain reaction. in fact, that blog comment i left on robbie’s site has opened up opportunities for us to share clients and collaborate on clients. it’s given me more than links, but revenue as well
I’m definitely in agreement with Samuel on this one. When a potential client asks me whether I do White hat, Grey hat, or Black hat SEO, I respond with “No Hat SEO”. Then of course, I go on to explain that I do what gets long-term results for my clients – by persuading trusted authority sites to link to the client website.
Search engines may penalize sites they discover using black hat methods, either by reducing their rankings or eliminating their listings from their databases altogether. Such penalties can be applied either automatically by the search engines’ algorithms, or by a manual site review. One example was the February 2006 Google removal of both BMW Germany and Ricoh Germany for use of deceptive practices. Both companies, however, quickly apologized, fixed the offending pages, and were restored to Google’s list.
A variety of methods can increase the prominence of a webpage within the search results. Cross linking between pages of the same website to provide more links to important pages may improve its visibility. Writing content that includes frequently searched keyword phrase, so as to be relevant to a wide variety of search queries will tend to increase traffic. Updating content so as to keep search engines crawling back frequently can give additional weight to a site. Adding relevant keywords to a web page’s meta data, including the title tag and meta description, will tend to improve the relevancy of a site’s search listings, thus increasing traffic. URL normalization of web pages accessible via multiple urls, using the canonical link element or via 301 redirects can help make sure links to different versions of the url all count towards the page’s link popularity score.
68. Google evaluates the quality of a site by taking relevance, content quality, compatibility and loading speed into account. If people like your content, engage with it and visit your site regularly, Google will send you more visitors.

Link Building has many “Hats”. Indeed Linkbuilding, can be seen as a “Black Hat” SEO marketing strategy, but it can also be a “White Hat” strategy. A “White Hat Link Building” example would be: “Guest Posting” – you write an article on a popular site that is read by many people and that artcile will generate an amount of backlinks pointing to your site eventually. The would be natural acquired backlinks. This is just one method. There are many more White Hat methods of Link Building. Reply
Hi Tyler, well said and great article. Another element I’d like to add is the power of content repurposing. Once you’re, for example, publishing content regularly on your blog, the same content can be adapted and repurposed for multiple other formats, rather than starting from scratch each time. Each blog post should at some point also become a video, a SlideShare presentation, a podcast episode, a post on Medium and Quora, answers to questions on Quora also, multiple posts to social, guest posts on other blogs, and so on. By doing so, you not only tap into the huge audiences on these other platforms, but also help develop the kind of link profile that supports strong and sustainable SEO.
There are two forms of black hat SEO. It can get very confusing because they are never really clearly separated by definition. Also, depending on which space or vertical you work in, both forms of black hat SEO can mean very, very different things.
Search engine results that appear as a result of approved methods, rather than payment or trickery, are referred to as organic search results. Because paid ads and sponsored links are prominently placed on search results pages, the portion of visible search results dedicated to organic results is limited, so top placement is very desirable.
In 1998, Graduate students at Stanford University, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, developed “Backrub”, a search engine that relied on a mathematical algorithm to rate the prominence of web pages. The number calculated by the algorithm, PageRank, is a function of the quantity and strength of inbound links. PageRank estimates the likelihood that a given page will be reached by a web user who randomly surfs the web, and follows links from one page to another. In effect, this means that some links are stronger than others, as a higher PageRank page is more likely to be reached by the random surfer.
Search engine optimisation, as with all things in life has a good, wholesome, fair and right way of doing things and a bad, unfair, downright naughty way of doing things. To describe the two SEO methodologies the terms “White Hat” and “Black Hat” SEO were coined.
The fact of the matter is, if you’re a source of great content, people are going to share that content. White hat link building will drive valuable traffic back to your website, resulting in a higher volume of relevant traffic and leads.
About.com guides run their own social media communities, send email newsletters and manage forums. Even though About.com is the overall brand, they encourage each niche to thrive on its own and in completely unique ways.
40. The duplicate content penalty has to do with having duplicate content pieces on your own website, and not with somebody else reusing your website content; otherwise, news sites, press release sites and lyrics sites would be penalized. Just make sure that there aren’t any duplicate/very similar pages on your website.
2. Create dedicated pages for each targeted keyword, but don’t go overboard with it. If you target the “small business seo” keyword, for example, you should create a

Any image that’s wider than the content wastes server space and diminishes the website loading speed. Repeat the process for your “featured images” as well; it is much better to create properly sized images for them, rather than reuse the big images. For best results, use tools like RIOT to set the best image size/quality compromise.
The number of options may look intimidating at first, but it is good to know that the plug-in will do its job by simply installing and activating it. You can gain an additional 10-30% speed increase by tweaking the settings, of course.
88. Set up Google Alerts for your website URL and company name. This way, you will be able to discover websites that have mentioned your site, but haven’t linked to it. Discover the valuable sites, contact their webmasters, and then politely ask them to turn the mentions into backlinks.
Use, by you or one client, in a single end product which end users are not charged for. The total price includes the item price and a buyer fee.
Engines now regard them as less important, it’s still important to use them and use them properly. Titles however still carry a lot of weight and when we think of semantic mark up it is obvious why. The title of anything is a declaration as to what the content might be, so make sure your page titles are a true representation of the content of the page.
22. Ask Google what are the keywords your website should be ranking for. Go to Google’s Keyword Planner Tool, and then input the URL of your website in the “Your landing page” field, without typing any keyword in the “Your product or service” field.
